Welcome to Day 1 of your Summer School! Come into our virtual hall and meet the team who will be your hosts and guides for the next four weeks. Join our interactive panel as they discuss topics including life in industry and research, and opportunities for students as they make their way from student to professional life. Guest panelists include Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley, Professor Louise Ryan (UTS), Rose Crocker (Australian Institute of Marine Science) and Dr Eugene Dubossarsky (AlphaZetta).

The Working Mathematician

Having trodden the path from introverted number nerd to options trader, I would like to talk about how one makes the transition to working mathematician. Prepare yourself for a slab of practical career advice served alongside prime numbers and stock options.

Participant Talks

Exchange ideas, build networks and explore how others are using mathematics to solve real world problems and further the discipline.

Attendees will take turns to present a five-minute presentation to AMSI Summer School peers. At the end of this session, a secret vote will be held where participants rank their peers (no one is allowed to vote for themselves).

Participants are encouraged to ask questions at the conclusion of each talk and build collaborative networks throughout these sessions.

Presentations with the most votes will win up to $400 in prizes.

Lunchtime Lecture
Geometry in ancient Mesopotamia
Presented by Dr Daniel Mansfield, UNSW

Mathematics is said to have begun long ago in ancient Mesopotamia, known as the cradle of civilization. During the 19th century, thousands of clay documents were discovered from lost cities such as Sippar, Lasa, and Babylon. Some are surprisingly advanced. This talk introduces new discoveries about their approach to geometry.
